Timber-frame insulation works as part of an assembly of layers. Mineral wool fills the spaces between structural members, while sheathing, air and vapour control layers, cladding, services and junctions influence the complete wall. Check these details before ordering insulation and starting installation.
Timber-frame insulation and frame spacing
The material should fill the spaces between studs without voids or unintended compression. Measure each opening, since actual spacing around corners, openings and services may vary. Cut on a stable surface using a tool that produces a clean, even edge.
Reduce thermal bridging through studs
Studs create repeating paths for heat flow. The design may include an additional insulation layer across them on the inside or outside. Assess the assembly as a whole, including fixings, sheathing and junctions with the foundation, floors and roof.
Airtightness and moisture control
Warm, moist air flowing through gaps can carry more moisture into the assembly than diffusion alone. Membrane joints, service penetrations, electrical sockets and connections to other building elements therefore need a continuous airtight layer. The type and position of the layers should follow a hygrothermal assessment.
Acoustics and services
Mineral wool helps absorb sound energy within the wall cavity, but the result also depends on the mass and number of lining layers, structural separation and airtightness. Electrical boxes on opposite sides of a wall should not form direct, back-to-back sound paths.
Fire resistance applies to the complete assembly
The reaction to fire classification of insulation is not the same as the fire resistance of a complete wall. The required performance is achieved by a tested or classified assembly comprising the frame, insulation, linings, fixings and details. The specified construction must be maintained on site.
