Mineral wool installation requires continuous insulation, the specified thickness and protection from moisture. Even a high-performance material cannot compensate for gaps or poorly connected air and vapour control layers. These six checks help identify installation problems before the construction is closed up.
1. Mineral wool installation starts with accurate cutting
A piece that is too narrow leaves a gap beside the rafter or stud. One that is too wide may bulge and make it difficult to install subsequent layers. Cut the material on a stable surface and size it to suit the product instructions and the spacing of the structural members.
2. Excessive compression
Forcing an overly thick layer into a shallow cavity is not equivalent to installing the specified thickness. It changes the geometry of the insulation and may push against the lining. The insulation thickness should match the available space and the design.
3. Gaps at junctions and penetrations
Roof windows, wall plates, corners, cables and wall junctions all require careful detailing. Small voids repeated throughout the assembly create paths for heat loss and may reduce local surface temperatures.
4. Discontinuous air and vapour control layers
Thermal insulation does not replace a continuous layer that controls air and water vapour movement. Seal overlaps, service penetrations and connections to masonry using materials specified for the system. The layer arrangement should follow a design that takes moisture conditions into account.
5. Installing damp insulation
Store packs on a stable surface and protect them from rain. Check the condition of the insulation and structure before closing up the assembly. Do not cover the insulation unless the required moisture and installation conditions have been met.
6. Mixing incompatible components
Membranes, tapes, fixings and linings work together as a technical system. Replacing one component with an arbitrary alternative may affect airtightness, fire resistance or durability. Follow the design, documentation and manufacturers’ instructions.
